365 Ways: Become a protest singer

-Bob Marley & The Wailers 'War' (Rastaman Vibration, 1976)
-Faithless 'Mass Destruction' (No Roots, 2004)
-Bogie Down Production 'Stop the Violence' (By All Means Necessary, 1988)
-Curtis Mayfield 'We've got to have peace' (Roots, 1972)
-Spearhead 'Piece O'Peace' (Home, 1994)
-Basement Jaxx (featuring Yellowman) 'Love is the answer' (Peace Songs, 2004)

-Public Enemy 'Fight the Power' (Fear Of A Black Planrt, 1994)
-Levellers 'Liberty Song' (Levelling The Land, 1992)
-Johnny Cash 'I Shall not be Moved' (My mother's Hymn Book, 2004)
-Chumbawumba 'Enough is Enough' (Anarchy, 1998)
-The Pogues 'Streets of Sorrow/Birmingham Six' (If I Should Fall From Grace With God, 1987)
-Jimmy Cliff 'Viet nam' (Wonderful World, Beautiful People, 1970)

this is an extract from a magazine i have recently discovered:

'i often joke that the moon and stars look beautiful, but any of us tried to live on them we would be miserable.
this blue planet of ours is a delightful habitat.
Its life is our life; its future our future.
Indeed, the earth acts like a mother to us all.
Like children, we are dependent on her.

In the face of such global problems as the greenhouse effect and depletion of the ozone layer, individual organisations and single nations are helpless. Unless we all work together, no solution can be found. Our mother earth is teaching us a lesson in universal responsibility....

i think we can say that, because of the lessons we have begun to learn, the next century will be friendlier, more harmonious, and less harmful. Compassion, the seeds of peace, will be able to flourish.

i am very hopeful. At the same time, i believe that every individual has a responsibility to help guide our global family in the right direction.

Good wishes alone are not enough; we have to assume responsibility.

Large human movements spring from individual human initiatives'.

introduction: by His Holiness the DalaiLama

from: mAp : the cultural avant-garde special issue
'vision of the future'
date: autumn '94
featuring: 70special commissions:
a film maker, a musician,
a bhuddist spiritual leader, 68 artists,
writers, fashion designers,
and photographers.

these people were invited to tell us what they would see of the 'new millenium'.

it is interesting how everyone talked about 'the new century'. some were hoping for a better world...

have we achieved what we were hoping for...really...?

G*

p.s. this mAp magazine was made from an acid free re-cycled paper, and all the proceeds from the sale went to providing jobs for the homeless.
